David Riaño graduated of Comuter Science at the Technical University of
Catalonia in 1992. He got a PhD in Artificial Intelligence at the same
university in 1997.
David Riaño holds a tenure as Associate Professor at the Department of
Computer Science and Mathematics at Univeristat Rovira i Virgili
(Spain) since 1999. Before that he promoted to tenure in 1995 as
Assistant Professor at that same university. From 1992 to 1995 he was
interim of that same position.
Charges and Memberships
Since January 2015, David Riaño is Coordinator of the Master on
Artificial intelligence at URV
He is also the current head of the Research Group on
Artificial Intelligence at the URV, since 1998. In the past he was
subdean of Computer Science Studies at the School of Engineering
(ETSE), at URV, between Janunary 2002 and February 2005. He was also
responsible of international relations for studies at the School of
Engineering between 1993 and 2001.
From 1995 to 2000, David Riaño
was Coordinator of the Software Section at the Deptartment of Computer
Science and Mathematics at URV.
Riaño is founding member of the Catalan Association of Artificial
Intelligence and member of the Spanish Society for Medical Informatics.
Since May 2015 he is also member of the Artificial Intelligence in
Riaño is working in the modeling of knowledge about medical procedures
for chronic and multimorbid patients. He is also developing machine
learning (data mining) technologies for the modelling of medical
procedures from the data registered in hospital information systems.
Riaño was general coordinator of the FP6 EU project K4CARE IST-026968.
He was also general coordinator of the Spanish Ministry project HYGIA
TIN2006-15453, and coordinator of the URV group during the last year of the FP5 EU project
hTechSight IST-2001-33174, and the Catalan project COSYS AATRM
199/2000. He has participated as researcher in many other competitive
Riaño has published forteen journal papers and more than eighty
conference papers. He is author of a book on Computer Theory and editor
of eight Springer LNAI books on Knowledge Representation for Health
David Riaño was invited researcher at Stanford Medical Informatics
(Stanford University) between June and December 2005. He was also
finishing his PhD at the Center voor Wiskunde and Informatica (CWI) in
Amsterdam between September and December 1994, and invited student at
the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bath in the UK
between July-Sept 1992 and July-Sept 1991. During 1991 he was part-time
researcher at the Center for Advanced Studies at Blanes (CEAB), now
David Riaño has collaborated with multiple health care institutions:
Department of Emergencies at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (Dr.
Jose-Ramon Alonso); Grup SAGESSA (Dr. Antoni Collado); Corporació
Sanitaria, Hospital Clínica de Barcelona (Dr. Albert Alonso);
Palliative Care Unit at the Hospital de Santa Tecla i Sant Pau in
Barcelona (Dr. Antonio Pascual); Paediatric Unit at the Hospital Joan
XXIII in Tarragona (Dr. Xavier Allué) and the Epidemiology Unit at the
same hospital (Dra. Montserrat Olona).
David Riaño is advisor of two PhD students. In the past he was advisor
of three PhD students: Aida Kamisalic, Joan Albert López-Vallverdú, and
John A. Bohada. In the last ten years he has also supervised eleven MsC
